The amethyst is the precious stone of Lapland, and Sodankylä is the location of Europe’s only amethyst mine active year-round. It is believed that the amethyst has surprising power.
Amethyst
The beautiful, violet and translucent amethyst is one of the best-known precious stones. In Lampivaara, in the Luosto area of Sodankylä, there are plentiful amethyst deposits.
Did you know? It is believed that amethyst can prevent the effects of electromagnetic radiation. Teachers of feng shui say that an amethyst should be placed near the TV, for example.
Europe’s only active amethyst mine, Lampivaara, is in the Pyhä-Luosto National Park, in a beautiful spot on the slope of a fell. There, you can look for amethysts yourself and keep what you find. At the same time, you can enjoy the most beautiful Lapland nature in the middle of a protected ancient forest area. In the summer you can get to the mine on foot and in the winter on skis, on the Amethyst Pendolino or with a snowmobile safari.
There are also several souvenir shops in Luosto, where you can buy a Lapland amethyst for good luck. It is believed that amethyst calms the mind, making it a good meditation stone.
